Overview:

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hate, intolerance and discrimination through education and litigation.

To battle the rising levels of intolerance among youth and the significant involvement of young people in hate crimes, the SPLC began publishing Teaching Tolerance magazine, which is distributed to more than 400,000 K-12 educators each fall and spring.

imagistic worked with the SPLC to build the Teaching Tolerance Web site, an online extension of the bi-annual Teaching Tolerance magazine.

Solution:

• Created look and feel and information architecture for the complete collection of content from current and back-issues of the magazine
• Developed ability for teachers to add and search lesson plans, rate web sites, gather information and communicate with other teachers
• Created games, interactive stories and other innovative ways for youth of various ages to explore race relations and hate issues
• Built a custom content publishing system that allows administrators to add, edit, store, manage and publish content to the site easily and quickly on a day-to-day basis
• Project was developed using MySQL, JSP, Java Servlets and Flash.

Results:

• 30% of Teaching Tolerance subscribers use the Teaching Tolerance Web site monthly.
• To date, the site has won numerous awards including a Webby, EMMA, and Big Chalk award in the activism/education categories.
